Utilization of Synthetic and Biobased Butadiene in Production of SBR to Boost Global Market
Butadiene, also called 1,3- butadiene, is a non-corrosive, colorless
gas and is commercially produced by extractive distillation from crude
butylene concentration stream. Biobased butadiene and synthetic
butadiene are the two product segments of the global butadiene market.
Both synthetic and biobased butadiene are broadly utilized in the
synthetic rubber processing and industrial polymer industries. The
global demand for biobased and synthetic butadiene is predicted to be
fuelled by the steady demand for rubber from the global automotive and
tire end-use industries.

Butadiene is extensively used in various end-use industries such as adhesives and sealants, tires, paints and coatings, automotive, electrical appliances, building and construction, textile, and packaging, among others. Butadiene is a key product in the petrochemical industry and, due to its low molecular weight and its simple chemical structure and high reactivity, it is an extremely useful building block used for the synthesis of other materials. The key uses of synthetic and biobased butadiene are as follows:
LyondellBasell Industries N.V., TPC Group, and Royal Dutch Shell plc are amongst the prime players dominant in the global synthetic and biobased butadiene market.

- Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR): The biggest single utilization of butadiene is for producing SBR. It is produced through the polymerization of butadiene and styrene. The prime usage of SBR is within tires as well as tire products. SBR is also utilized in sealants and adhesives, cable and wire coatings, and in a number of other rubber articles including shoe soles.
- Styrene-Butadiene Latex (SBL): Latex, generally, is a stable aqueous dispersion, containing polymer particles with a diameter of around 0.05-5 micrometers. The applications of SBL include its use in foam rubber in cushions, carpet backing, sponges, pads, etc. SBL is also utilized in adhesives for tiles, floorings, roofing, roads, etc.
- Polybutadiene (PB): This polymer is produced by butadiene polymerization and is utilized as a raw material in tires and within impact modifiers for enhancing a material’s ability to absorb sudden impacts without substantial damage. PB is also used as an intermediate for producing acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin.
- Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS) Resins: These are two-phased blends and are prepared by either suspension grafting polymerization or emulsion polymerization. These resins are utilized in a broad range of applications such as office machines including appliances and computers. They are also used in telephones and automotive parts.
- Nitrile Rubber (NBR): Nitrile rubber is made by copolymerization of butadiene and acrylonitrile and is also called as nitrile-butadiene rubber. NBR is utilized in a number of products such as fuel lines, hoses, gasket seals, automotive parts, footwear, structural adhesives, lattices, gloves, and oil-resistant articles or clothing.
- Styrene-Butadiene Block Copolymers (SBS and SEBS): Polymerization of numerous blocks of butadiene and styrene is done for the formation of styrene-butadiene styrene block copolymers. These thermoplastic materials find their usage in asphalt extenders, adhesives, for lubrication in oil additives, automotive applications, and packaging of medical devices, food, toys, and disposable dinnerware.
